Win an all-inclusive guided walk along the Paparoa Track for 2 valued at $3,798!

Paparoa Guided Walks in conjunction with Coast Road Resilience Group are running a raffle to fundraise our resistance to TIGA Minerals and Metals Ltd, a largely Australian owned corporate mining company; who has again applied for consents for industrial style mining of ilmenite, garnet, zircon and gold – an up to 50 years operation right in the middle of the beautiful Coast Road.

Funds raised will be used to pay for expert advice from hydrologists, planners & lawyers as well as other costs that may arise in our opposition to the mining corporation’s plans.

Concerns:

-          Degradation of the environment and adverse effects on endangered wildlife.

-          Mining effects on streams and lagoons, neighboring SNA wetlands, hydrology, and high water table.

-          Threats to the habitat of the endemic Taiko/Westland Petrel – this is the only breeding ground in the world for these amazing and endangered birds and a mere 3km away from the mine site.

-          Noise, visual, amenity and health impacts on nearby residents and wider community.

-          Constant noise due to 24/7 operation and 17 hours/day truck movements along SH6.

-          The risk of this beautiful areas of the Coast becoming more and more like an industrial zone and trucking route with plans for expansion of a long term mineral sands industry.

-          Reputational damage to tourism

-          Safety hazards with heavy trucks mixing with tourists, locals, cyclists and pedestrians.

-          Road safety on, and serious degradation of, a vulnerable highway due to heavy vehicle movements; up to an extra 350 per week.

-          Limited benefits to local community considering unemployment and majority profits offshore.

-          Tiga have applied to mine an initial 63ha in the middle of the Coast Rd, which would be an up to 13 year operation; however have permits (or in the process of applying) for most of the rest of the Barrytown flats; which would enable them to apply for further resource consents. Which is why it’s so important to stop the momentum now!
